Once again early this morning I was overwhelmed with joy and wonder at the arrival of a new baby boy!

Katie and Andy welcomed their son at 4:23am - weighing 8 lbs 13 oz, and measuring 20in, a squishy, delightful little boy, with a wise demeanor and nice round cheeks.

Katie's labor was fast and relentless. She found her inner strength and was able to cope with the very close together contractions amazingly well. Theirs was another successful VBAC overseen by the one and only Doctor Tate.

One interesting aspect about this little one's birth: he was born in the caul (which was once believed to be a sign the child is destined for greatness :)).

It was an honor and joy to be your doula, guys - congratulations once again!

This morning a little before and a little after 5am, two beautiful baby boys entered this world, and were welcomed with much love, joy and gratitude!

Twin A and twin B are both incredibly cute and strong, weighing at 5 lb 11oz and 5 lb 8oz respectively, both 18in long. Mom was amazing, breezing through most of the labor, and facing the last intense couple of hours with much grace and determination.

I am incredible grateful to have witnessed their birth, as well as their sister's last year. Happy birthday, boys, and Mazal Tov, Esther and Avi!

The time has come again to ask you to please join us on our annual charitable journey!

You may know that every year local families participate in creating a one-of-a-kind, beautiful and important piece of art: a calendar the profits from which go entirely to a not-for-profit organization committed to bettering the lives of children and families in direct or indirect ways.

Last year, with your support we proudly raised $5,630 for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

This year, we hope to top that in our quest to raise funds for another worthy organization, Jack and Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation.

Who are they and what do they do for children? Imagine a family with young children and a parent who is fighting an advanced stage of cancer. Jack and Jill has a unique mission: for such families, they will provide an all-expenses-paid getaway to a location of the family's choosing! For several magical and memorable days, they get to be a family having fun, away from the medical intrusiveness of battling this illness. Something so ordinary for most other families, yet so unique and precious. Something they are grateful for, for the rest of their lives. An experience that provides the young children with memories they will review and cherish as they grow, memories of joyful times with their parents, when they got to be the simply that: a family, together, enjoying life. Jack and Jill also provides them with cameras if needed, and a way to create a keepsake memory book free of charge.

This charity speaks to me on so many levels: the delighting in the present moment; the creation of visual reminders of the joy and closeness in our families. I feel strongly that their work is important and will help these young children remember the love their family shared, as the future unfolds.

For the second year in a row, I have some of my fine art pieces on display in the Southern Fried Photography exhibit in Castleberry Hill, in the Granite Room. You might have seen them during this year's Flux 2011 art evening - if not, there is still time, they will be there through next weekend.

Can you spot them? This time I have three framed pieces and several matted ones. The framed ones are "Swing I and II", "Ascent" and "Suspension of Disbelief".

It will open a window showing all the admins for the page. Select yourself.

Click ‘Save’. The page will now be added to your profile.

Your profile will also be listed on the page as ‘Page Owner’.

A beautiful boy was born today, after a couple of days of intense, loving, hard work. His mother sailed through the always unpredictable (and always magical) birth journey with strength, grace and fierce determination, surrounded by love and support.

It was a joy and honor to witness Williams Everett's birth, as his mommies' doula!

"Liam" was born at 11:39am on August 29th, weighing 8 lbs 6oz, measuring 20.5 in, and being as perfect and delightful as everyone anticipated!

He is one lucky boy, entering a wonderful circle of love and warmth, on this beautiful day. Thank you for the chance to be there and witness the beginning of what I know will be a wonderful life journey for him, and for you all as a family!

Tonight's coverage of the PGA championship reminds me once again why I love late Summer in Atlanta. The light before sunset is golden, warm and enveloping, so very beautiful!

Remembering Audrey{audrey's gift photography special}

You might remember a post from earlier this year, when I was reaching out to all of you asking you to nominate a worthy family for the Audrey's Gift photography offering, established in memory of a sweet and brave little girl I am honored to have known and photographed.

Each year, from your nominations (emailed to oana@shutterview.com by March 15th) I will be choosing one family with (one or more) children under 4, who have gone through some health challenges. The family will get a session, two paper portraits and all files in medium resolution (over $1800 in value).

Today is the day Audrey would have turned 4, and her sweet memory is strong. She has touched the lives of everyone who met her, and this yearly gift is just one of the ways her legacy continues.

Here are some highlights from this year's Audrey's Gift photo session with Erin's sweet twins, as well as the story she has sent detailing this family's challenges, love and hope:

After 4 years of trying to conceive, I joyfully became pregnant with boy/girl twins. When I was 5.5 months pregnant I was placed on routine bedrest. The Dr was very happy at my next visit and said everything looked great! 2 days later my husband was rushing me to the hospital as my son's water had ruptured. The Dr placed me in labor and delivery and told me that there was nothing that they could do. If I went into labor the twins would die - if I didn't go into labor the outlook for my son was one of significant disabilities. I managed to make it through that night and 20 more. I was not allowed out of my bed except to go to the bathroom and for a quick shower. 4 times a day they checked to see if the babies' hearts were still beating. And those were the EASY days! I developed an infection and my children were delivered when I was 6 months pregnant weighing 1lb each. I was told my son had a 6% chance and my daughter a 12% chance of surviving - if they survived then the chances of serious physical and mental disabilities were 75%. So I sat by their bedsides every day for 5 months watching them be repeatedly resuscitated and praying all the time. Finally, I was able to take them home, but the work was only just beginning. We spent many hours in Dr's offices, seeing therapists, and pushing every day to have as normal of a future as possible. They turned 3years old this May and I'm thrilled to say that they are catching up beautifully with only some speech delays.

Unfortunately, my husband was diagnosed with oral cancer Stage 3 this past March. So on their birthday, he was going through chemo and radiation. He has had part of his tongue removed and has to eat through a tube in his stomach (for now). With medical bills and time off of work, we never could have afforded such a wonderful photo session with Oana. It was so special to be able to have a few pictures with the twins and their Dad as well as so many wonderful shots of them playing. Tomorrow is not promised - my family is grateful for every day that we have together. I treasure every photo of all three of them because I have had to face the very real possibility that I may not have them tomorrow. So we celebrate every moment we have to play and laugh today!

Thank you for this wonderful gift - I am grateful that Audrey meant so much to you that you shared it with us.

He has not been diagnosed yet but it now being treated by genetic doctors & neurologists. Mason has had a feeding tube in for 10 wks now bc he is failing to thrive. Super Moon {atlanta photography}

Tonight's Moon is closer by a little bit to the Earth than it's been since 1993 or so. The moon is at an average of 238,000 miles from the Earth. During the Super Moon, it will be 221,567 miles from the Earth. It being a full moon, on top of it, will make for a beautifully bright experience! Go see if you still can!

My pictures tonight are of a moody moon, bashful behind pear tree branches. (at the bottom below you can see a more "naked" view of the moon as seen on March 18th).
Enjoy! (did you know my undergraduate degree is in Astrophysics and Atomic physics? Always fascinating topics!)

the more orange images were taken earlier, the whiter ones later -- all in the span of about an hour. The positioning of the moons in the composite below is purely artistic :)

Audrey's gift families chosen!

Yes, I did say families, we ended up choosing three families for our Audrey's Gift sessions this Summer, for one grand prize and two special prizes. Couldn't narrow it down to just one, all these people are fighting for normalcy and joy in their lives and we are honored to be bringing a bit of sunshine to them, with these sessions (totalling close to $3,000 in time and products).

As someone who has experienced an earthquake of over 7 degrees, it's almost incomprehensible to imagine one almost 1000 times more intense.

I am auctioning one of my favorite original fine art prints. This one has been exhibited in Castleberry Hill, downtown Atlanta, in Fall 2010 and I have kept it in my personal collection since.

It's a landscape piece with a split-toned finish, picturing a Colorado scene. It's entitled "Homestead" and it was photographed by me during Summer 2010. It is professionally framed by one of Atlanta's best framing company (the Framers on Peachtree) in a beautiful black frame, slightly distressed around the edges.
The print is on the highest quality metallic, textured photopaper. It comes hand-signed on the archival mat, and with a certificate of authenticity affixed on the back.
The finished piece is 22x18in in size, and its value is estimated at over $400.

Following the interest from several mommies of bunnies, I will be holding a day of portraits with bunnies, on Saturday, April 2nd.

Exact location TBD -- as of now we are planning on photographing in our studio in NE Atlanta.

What is included for the base cost of $85:
- email consultation regarding clothing choices
- Spring-themed session (bunny, flowers, backdrops and other props as needed)

- $65 credit towards prints and products

March 1st celebrates the holiday of Martisor in Romania. Little symbolic talismans are gifted to girls and women, tied with a lucky red and white string. These are to be worn as broches for several days (above, Mary is holding a martisor showing a chimney sweeper, another sign of good luck, sent to us by one of our Romanian friends).

Also an early March tradition is "Babele" (the Old Ladies): pick one of the first nine days of March in advance, and its weather will represent your fortune in the current year.
This year I picked March 1st and today is a beautiful sunny day after a stormy night last night :)

With your help, our 2011 Childhood Calendar has raised $5,630 for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta!

This is such a dear project to me, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for every one of you who signed up their child as a model, passed the word during out voting stages, voted for our child-of-the-month contestants, donated to the fundraiser, purchased or helped us sell these beautiful calendars!

We are now, finalizing the selection of the 2012 beneficiary, and I look forward to letting everyone know our choice soon! Thanks for everyone's suggestions and input via our Facebook outreach, you have suggested some great organizations!

You were there for us, as we reached out during this year's fundraiser -- we want to be there for you, and help a cause or organization dear to your heart.

So, for every session booked during the rest of February (good for any time in 2011), one HUNDRED dollars of the session fee will go to a school or non-profit of your choice.

Color{photography contest, color portraits}

You might have noticed by now, if you're familiar with my work, that I am in love with color :)
Especially where child portraits are concerned, I am moved by how color plays a role in defining the mood of an image, and highlighting the personality of the person in the portrait.

(not to say I don't love black and white imagery -- remember, I only photographed black and white film for many years in the beginning of my love affair with photography -- or even with vintage, muted shades; but colors, when doing their job well, stir my soul in a very special way).

That being said, here I share with you my entries to a recent portrait photographers' contest themed "Color".

"Pure and Simple" -- studio modeling sessions {atlanta child photographers commercial studio}

Three brave families ventured out on the icy streets of Atlanta today to be part of portfolio modeling sessions showcasing the new "Pure and Simple" studio session, to be added to the Oana Hogrefe Photography offerings beginning in February 2011 - aren't my little models absolutely stunning?

The Pure and Simple will be an indoor, weather-proof, shorter session in my studio, featuring clean images with light backgrounds focusing on the subject. It will be available during weekdays only, between 11-2, for 1-2 people sessions. It's perfect as an add-on session for families who already had a Creative Session recently and are looking for newer images to celebrate a milestone. It's also a good way to create quick headshots or special occasion cards.

Our signature Creative Session and Image Session will continue to be available year-round, on location around Atlanta (as well as elsewhere for my select destination clients), and will continue to feature my absolutely favorite type of photography, which uses the environment to support the beauty of people and relationships.
